GoodRx for Diabetics

Sometimes, even with a healthy diet and exercise, your blood sugars are still high. To combat this, your doctor may prescribe you medication(s). GoodRx is a great, free resource for diabetics to compare costs, get discounts, and learn about medications. Knowledge is power!

Compare Costs

The most common use of GoodRx is to compare the cost of medications. Simply type in a medication and it will pull up the costs of local pharmacies. When I searched for glimepiride (Amaryl), I found out that it costs $17 at Walgreens but $4 at Walmart. GoodRx lets you shop around from the comfort of your own home. If you are taking several medications, the cost savings can really add up.

Discounts

In addition to listing the price at local pharmacies, GoodRx suggests ways to save on your medications. Next to each price at the pharmacy, there is frequently an option for discount cards or free coupons. You can print or download them on the mobile app to bring to the pharmacy. The manufacturers information is also listed with even more resources for coupons. GoodRx is accepted at over 70,000 different pharmacies.

You can use GoodRx if you have Medicare, Medicaid, or another insurance. If you have a limited income or no insurance, patient assistance programs are available.

If there is a cheaper medication that fulfills what your doctor prescribed, GoodRx will list that suggestion. For example, let’s say your doctor prescribed you Saxenda, which costs $1,287. You jump onto GoodRx and see that Bydureon is in the same class of drug, but costs $711. You ask your doctor to switch medications, saving you $576!

Another way to save money is to order a 90-day supply of medications. When you order a 90-day supply, the cost may be cheaper, and you don’t have to travel to the pharmacy as much. A win all around!

All these resources have saved patients up to 80% on their medications [1].

Learn

For all medications, GoodRx includes information about latest news. This can give you insight into cost savings, side effects, and other ways to manage your diabetes. The information on GoodRx is reputable and accurate.

Too Good to Be True?

A healthy sense of skepticism is never a bad thing, but GoodRx is truly a great, 100% free resource. You can make an account to save your information, but it is not required. In fact, GoodRx doesn’t require any of your personal information. They make money from advertisements and referral fees. GoodRx has been featured on NBC News, Good Morning America, Fox News, and the Wall Street Journal. It is also accredited by the Better Business Bureau [2].
